Mr. Carr took three Middle School teachers to a conference on the topic of MAP Improvement this past week (9/18/08). We gained ALOT of information, as well as strategies we can use throughout the year. I would like to share two things I brought back with me. If you are interested in more information concerning this conference, please see Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Luter, Mr. Carr, or myself. Thanks!

1. I realized at this conference that Sturgeon RV is alot farther along when it comes to analyzing MAP data than other schools. Many of the teachers who attended the conference from other schools did not even know what AYP was, what it stood for, or how it affected their districts performance. I feel like the things we are doing as a district will definitely show to the state that we are dedicated in finding ways to identify those students we need to help.

2. Speaking of helping students, Herman Bleu (the speaker) gave us a suggestion when choosing who to tutor. It's called KEEP TWO/MOVE TWO. For each subject/grade level, pick the two students who scored at the bottom of PROFICIENT and the two students who were at the top of BASIC. These four students need to be the beginning for determining your focus for tutoring. In other words..... you want to KEEP TWO in PROFICIENT and MOVE TWO up to PROFICIENT.

What does this mean to performance? Well, I have 40 fifth graders this year for math. If I can move just two BASIC students to PROFICIENT, then I have increased my scores by 5%. Imagine what I can do if I add just 2-3 more students to the tutoring sessions. Ten percent of my class is only 4 students!!! That opened my eyes to what I can do to help increase scores.
